US rail the US chemical industry is continuing its fight to reform the way oversight of the railroads is structured, claiming that producers are "captive customers" to a handful of powerful monopolistic carriers. "While I can not candidly appear before you today and blame all of the job flight taking place from our country on rail pricing and service practices, I can confidently state that it is a factor contributing to job flight in the chemical industry." This is just a sample of the at times dire testimony recently given by Charles Platz, president of chemical producer Basell North America, before a House Congressional subcommittee looking into whether or not there should be reforms to railroad rate quote practices in the US.
