New clean fuel regulations in California and voluntary slowdowns by shipping companies have substantially reduced air pollution caused by near-shore shipping operations, according to a study led by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).rnThe terms of the study appear rather limited, being restricted to an investigation into emissions from a single containership, Margrethe Maersk, in May 2010. However, the study's sponsors, NOAA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), are sufficiently confident in its results to say that it could have "national and global significance".
