The risks presented by hydrogen sulphide should not be overlooked. The Mariners' Alerting and Reporting Scheme (MARS), which is administered by the Nautical Institute and offers a way for seafarers to highlight hazards anonymously, recently carried details of two incidents, one involving crude oil, in which hydrogen sulphide presented an actual risk to the crew and in one case led to two seamen being hospitalised.
