After leaving the RAF, Malcolm Sims went on to work as an engineer and by the late 1960s, while working for Acrow, was taking an interest in the emerging business of petrochemical transport, and in particular its record on safety. His wife Betsy vividly remembers the night light always being on. Malcolm, a skilled draughtsman, would design by drawing his ideas in orthographic and isometric projections and by morning was out the door travelling up and down the country, gathering information on what was needed and what materials were available.
