Shipbuilding in Europe without subsidies?

AWES, the Association of European Shipbuilders and Shiprepairers, was founded decades ago by West-European members. That is why they still keep their »W« in their shortened name. On the other hand it is impossible to pronounce (AES) without the »W«. Today, the following countries are members of AWES: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands (NSI), Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. Some shipbuilding nations in the east of Europe are on the way to become new members of AWES. But the main question remains, how European shipbuilders can survive and compete with their colleagues in Far-East (Japan, Korea, China) without subsidies.
