A week before »SMM '98« opened its doors, it was already announced by the organizers that important and very heavy things were going to happen: On 15th September the heaviest product ever moved during a SMM exhibition was lifted by mobile cranes from the truck to its place in hall 6. It was a Waertsilae NSD diesel engine of type 12 V 46 (460 mm bore, 580 mm stroke, 905-1,050 kW/cyl., 10,860-12,600 kW for 12 cylinders, 450-514 min~(-1)) weighing 165 t, being 10 m long, nearly 6 m wide and 4 m high. The engine was built in Finland and meanwhile delivered to J.J. Sietas shipyard in Ham-burg-Neuenfelde. It belongs to the third propulsion set of a series of up to now seven ro-ro vessels (4 x 7,250 dwt + 3 x 7,100 dwt) being contracted to Sietas shipyard for delivery January-December 1999 and all chartered finally by Finnish Transfennica.
