L.A. officials urge governor to intervene in battery plant cleanup

Los Angeles County's Board of Supervisors wrote a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown (D) yesterday slamming the state's slow response to lead-contaminated soil near a troubled battery recycling plant in Vernon, Calif. The letter, which was signed by all five supervisors, asked Brown to intervene in the cleanup because the Department of Toxic Substances Control had taken too long to ensure the cleanup of 39 homes identified as having elevated lead levels near an Exide Technologies battery plant. Crews hired by the company began work this week replacing soil, but only at two homes near the factory with the highest lead concentrations (Greenwire, Aug. 12).
