Agency and state policies in many parts of the United States compel officials to capture and kill animals that may have been involved in attacks on humans. A bear was killed, for example, after mauling a marathon runner over the weekend (Greenwire, June 20). And officials at Disney World captured and killed at least six alligators after one of the reptiles dragged a toddler underwater last week at one of the park's resorts. But some observers criticize the practice, saying that there is no justice system for animals and that there is little support for the idea that particularly vicious animals will become repeat offenders.
