Barrow changes its name back to Utqiagvik

The northernmost community in the United States perches on the Arctic Ocean's edge in Alaska, and it is about to get back its original name. The people of the town now formerly known as Barrow voted in October to restore its indigenous name of Utqiagvik, which means "a place to gather wild roots" in Inupiaq. The measure passed by six votes, 381 to 375, in the city of 4,300. The town is the largest in Alaska's North Slope Borough, which has historically been an oil- and gas-producing region.
