EPA watchdog to review cancer risks of common fumigant

A complaint to a government hotline has prompted a new look at the cancer risk of a pesticide that farmers useto kill nematodes in the soil.EPA's Office of Inspector General said yesterday it's reviewing the agency's actions in assessing the cancer riskof 1,3-Dichloropropene, which EPA has been reviewing as part of the regular re-registration process.In a notice to the agency, the IG office said it plans to look at how closely EPA followed policies and proceduresin assessing the pesticide, a fumigant used by farmers who grow potatoes and other crops. The inquiry, to beconducted at EPA headquarters, is a result of a hotline complaint, the IG office said.
