Wildfire chars 250 acres, forces evacuations

A human-caused wildfire in north-central Arizona near the small town of Congress forced some evacuations this week, authorities said. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said yesterday that crews had stopped the fire from progressing but it had charred about 250 acres. Yavapai County sheriff's officials said eight homes were evacuated in the Ox Ranch area Wednesday. Evacuation orders were lifted that night. They said the fire was about 9 miles northwest of Congress and had destroyed two structures. Crew battled the wildfire from the air and ground and worked overnight to slow its movement and protect nearby structures, according to authorities.
