摘要

In his remarkable series of woodblock prints,"36 Views of Mount Fuji," 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hoku-sai explored a prominent landform that dwells at the center of a nation's consciousness. By means of varying perspective and juxtaposing diverse elements with a single unifying theme, Hokusai renders a mosaicked commentary on daily life and the beauty of nature. For 16 years, this magazine has sought to lift into international consciousness a utility—the Global Positioning System — that is transforming the way people live, work, and move about in the world. We have done this by serving as a medium for the views of thousands of contributors: engineers, product designers, and end users; the system's operators and its beneficiaries; advertisers and article writers; public officials and private citizens; experts and novices, visionaries and practitioners, professionals and amateurs. And, since the opening editorial in our premiere issue, my own running commentary.
