South Korea challenges Japan's dominance in rechargeable battery production

South Korea is predicted to forge ahead in rechargeable-battery production next year, possibly dislodging Japan from the top spot. South Korean companies are poised to grab 40 percent of the global market next year en route to snatching "leadership in the battery industry in five years," according to Shin Chan Hoon, chief analyst at Korea Electronics Technology Institute. Japanese manufacturers used to control 95 percent of the global rechargeable-battery market. South Korea's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) forecasts that this share will plunge to 55 percent next year.
