Global virtual teams have the deck stacked against them: long distances, cultural differences, lack of social cues to help gauge each other's trustworthiness-and leaders unprepared to deal with these challenges. What such teams need for success are special leadership, consistent work practices, and keen attention to communication and building trust through a focus on member commitment and competency. TR W Automotive trains its continuous improvement leaders on how to apply the Goals, Roles, Processes, and Interpersonal Relationships (GRPI) Model with their far-flung virtual project members to create the all-important interdependent relationships and team cohesion in the absence of face-to-face interactions.
