There are two economies. One fell into a recession in 2008. Some industries are stagnating, companies are reluctantly investing, and, worldwide, many people are unemployed and underemployed. The second economy is one of growth. Companies are doing extremely well with solid profits, they enjoy premium pricing and outstanding customer loyalty, and they create jobs. In Demand, Adrian Slywotzky wonders why some companies struggle while others succeed. For example, he asks: Why is the Kindle leading the e-book revolution and outselling the Sony Reader, in spite of Sony's three-year head start? Is it because, as Slywotzky surmises, Amazon.com created demand for the Kindle by capturing the emotional space in the marketplace?
