REID SEEKS TO RAISE HOPES ON SENATE ENERGY BILL

Seeking to revive hopes for Senate action on some kind of clean energy legislation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in an Aug. 31 press call that "two Republican Senators have expressed an interest in legislation with a renewable portfolio standard" and that he would work until the end of the current Congress to lock down their support for a Democratic energy bill. The renewable portfolio standard (the term is used interchangeably with renewable electricity standard) has been the subject of lobbying from the renewables industry and environmental groups, and is seen as the strongest measure that could get through Senate gridlock. Cap-and-trade "doesn't have the traction we wish it had" in the Senate, said Reid, who is locked in a tough fight for reelection in his home state of Nevada.
