The latest round of U.N. climate talks wrapped up in Bonn, Germany, earlier this month, producing what Executive Secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change Yvo de Boer called a "big step forward" in international negotiations. De Boer said the talks, which began in late May and ended June 10, fulfilled expectations of laying the groundwork for the next international climate summit, set to be held in Cancun, Mexico, this December. "This session has made important progress," de Boer told reporters at a press briefing June 11. "Certainly the work here opens the way for Cancun to deliver a full package of operational measures that will allow developing countries to take fast and stronger action across all areas of climate change."
