The Department of Energy said it seeks to demonstrate a 90 percent CO2 capture rate for advanced pre- and post-combustion capture technologies without going over a set level of increases to the levelized cost of electricity (LCE), the Department announced in its annual strategic plan released this week. DOE said it would work to achieve the capture rate while staying under a 35 percent increase in the LCE for post-combustion and a 10 percent increase for pre-combustion systems, but did not set a deadline for the goal. "The numbers come from system studies that we in DOE's CCS program have done that say of the known technologies that we're working on from a theoretical perspective, if those technologies mature and are put together in an advanced system, that's the cost and performance that we can say is achievable at that 90 percent capture rate," a DOE official explained to GHG.
