The recent US$4.65 billion investment by China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) in Syncrude Canada Ltd. represents a major renewal of interest in the Canadian energy market by large Chinese oil companies. Sinopec's purchase of ConocoPhillips Co.'s 9 percent stake in the Syncrude Group is by far the largest Chinese ownership stake in an active, oil-producing venture in Alberta's energy sector. Are Chinese companies set to enter the Canadian energy sector with more investment? How should Canada perceive and receive such an inflow of capital from China?
