The friction properties of airport runways are measured regularly in order to detect any reduction in skid resistance and to schedule maintenance operations accordingly. Self-wetting continuous friction measurement equipment constitutes the preferred tool for this type of measurement. Many models exist and are currently used widely on airports. In France, since 2006, such equipment must be approved by the STAC (civil aviation technical department).
