Oehme prefers durable species, especially Lysima-chia and Rudbeckia, and has made ground covers his specialty. Effective at a distance, they require minimal care. Grasses play a major role, providing calm green areas separating competing flowers or attracting attention themselves. Huge beds are Oehme's signature touch. His commitment to herbaceous plants has challenged the dominance of lawns in private gardens, housing schemes or public spaces. Europe could certainly adapt Oehme's method especially to small areas in cities.
