Traders found themselves in a dilemma after the stock markets closed the morning of Sept. 11, especially those who had been long in the S&P 500 futures during the night session and were stopped out because of the tragic news. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) only opened for 10 minutes that morning, closing at 8:40 a.m. CST upon comprehending the magnitude of the disaster. After closing, and with the United States and world grappling with the tragedy, the CME and other U.S. markets had no information on when they would reopen.
