EVALUATION OF WASTEWATER CONTAMINATION BY MUSK COMPOUNDS

Synthetic musk compounds or synthetic fragrances are organic substances commonly used as fragrant constituents of perfumes, detergents, cosmetics and personal care products. These compounds are discharged after use via domestic wastewater and sewage treatment plants to the aquatic environment. The result is accumulation in the environment and occurrence in the food-chain, especially of aquatic and marine ecosystems. Synthetic musk compounds are also found in surface water, fish tissues and body fluids (blood, urine, milk) as well as tissues of the human body. Musk compounds belong to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) because of their persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. This study is focused on the determination of 9 worldwide used musk compounds in wastewater (influent and effluent) from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) Brno-Modfice (February 2010). Optimized solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) was used for isolation of analytes from samples. The identification and quantification of analytes was carried out by GC-MS analysis. The two most commonly detected synthetic polycyclic musks in wastewater were galaxolide (2765 ng.L~(-1)) and tonalide (422.8 ng.L~(-1)), and the most extended nitromusks were musk ketone (90.33 ng.L1) and musk xylene (40.55 ng.L~(-1)). The overall removal efficiency of synthetic musks from WWTP wastewater ranged from 37.43 to 99.99 % (e.g. for galaxolide 55.48 %, for musk ketone 39.07 %).
