This volume contains papers presented at “Frontiers in Health PolicynResearch,” a conference held in Washington, D.C., on June 5, 1997.nConvened by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the conferencenbrought together academic economists who study issues of criticalnimportance to health care policy and people whose expertise andninterests are in the design and implementation of national policy—nleading government ofªcials, journalists, industry experts, researchers,nand legislative staff. The conference was motivated by the belief thatnmore extensive dialogue between the policy and academic communitiesnwould help make the work of the academic researchers morenuseful and relevant and that the results of their research could benhelpful in assessing the consequences of alternative policies beingnconsidered in Washington and elsewhere. The conference is patternednafter NBER’s highly successful annual conference series, Tax Policynand the Economy, which began more than ten years ago and has beennan important channel of communication between public ªnance researchersnand tax policy experts.
