The Middle East is considered one of the world's most strategically important regions. It has the world's largest oil reserves, and is the world's most militarized area. The oil has served in no small part to feed massive procurements of arms, but persisting regional tensions are also a major factor. And, more than any other area of the world, the region is characterized by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. All these factors combine to create the most volatile region in the world.
