Market Overview. The value and scope of the Algerian market have increased considerably in recent years as Algeria pursues a major force-wide modernization program. Between 2006 and 2010, defense expenditures grew at a compound annual rate of 17 percent. Moreover, between 2008 and 2009, defense spending increased 33 percent. The dual need to procure equipment and provide training for both power projection and counterinsurgency missions is the primary driver behind such a rapid increase in defense expenditures. In addition to increasing its defense spending, Algeria is expanding its contacts with major arms-exporting nations. Algeria is gradually renewing its security assistance ties with France and is seen as a likely client of defense enterprises in Italy, Spain, Turkey, and China.
