As supreme commander of the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF), King Abdullah Ⅱ is the ultimate authority on all military matters. The administration of the nation's armed forces, however, is in the hands of the prime minister, who doubles as the minister of defense. Because of its lack of significant coastline, Jordan has only a tiny navy, but maintains a fairly sizable and well-equipped army and air force. The Army is structured as follows: two armored division headquarters, each with two armored brigades, one mechanized infantry brigade, one artillery brigade, and one air defense brigade; two mechanized infantry division headquarters, each with one armored brigade, two mechanized infantry brigades, one artillery brigade, and one defense brigade; one Royal Guard brigade; one Special Forces (airborne) brigade; and one independent artillery brigade.
