The South African arms market is entering a period of transformation. Funding and deliveries for the Strategic Defence Procurement Program, the multibillion-dollar arms package initiated in 1999, have ended. Now, in the wake of the SDPP, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is looking to engage in a new round of procurement activity. The next round of procurement will take place in the context of the Vision 2020 plan, a strategic blueprint designed to better equip the South African military for an evolving array of peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and sovereignty protection missions in the coming years.
