The Greens inherited a utility business. But their horse-trading instincts go back a few generations. Lemuel green, a flour mill owner, took the excess power from the water-turned generator at his mill in 1908 and sold it between dusk and midnight to anybody in Alton, Kan. who knew what to do with it. Soon he quit the milling business and started stringing transmission lines across the western part of the state. Before his death in 1930 he had built a utility that lit 56 Kansas communities.
