Last Fall Gateway Dipped Its Toe Into The Choppy waters of consumer electronics by offering a 42-inch flat-screen plasma TV. I found its display so generally unpleasant I didn't even bother writing about the thing. But Gateway claims it has become the bestselling home plasma model on the market―no doubt because, at $3,000, it has been among the cheapest. Now the company wades in farther with four Gateway-branded digital cameras. Like the TV, they look at first blush like bargains―until you do a little research. Smart sleuths at the always useful imaging-resource.com and dcresource.com revealed that these cameras are anything but unique. Further sleuthing of my own proved that the units are not the "unprecedented value" Gateway claims.
