With the major league playoffs in sight, a lot of people have baseball on the brain. That's especially true for a fan like me, who was ecstatic this slimmer when Chicago, my hometown, played host to the All Star Game. Coincidentally, I just finished reading a terrific new book on the sport, Money-ball. Author Michael Lewis provides a fascinating study of Billy Beane, an enormously successful if unorthodox general manager. The question Lewis asks: "How did one of the poorest teams in baseball [financially speaking], the Oakland Athletics, win so many games?"
