WHAT DO YOU EXPECT from your portfolio?A dozen years ago a securities industry survey asked individual investors what they would consider a "respectable" return from stocks in 2000. The median number: 33%.That was a nutty answer, and not just because a crash arrived soon after. It was ridiculous because it was nothing like the historical return, which averages around 9% before inflation and 6% after. The survey in question has been discontinued, but it might well yield nutty results today, too, this time going in the other direction.
