I first interviewed Michael Dell in 1992. His company was eight years old; he was 27. Dell had started his company—ini-tially called PC's Limited-while a freshman at the University of Texas. Dell told me his parents called one day to say they were in Austin and wanted to drop by the dorm room for a visit Dell scrambled, hiding his PC inventory in his roommate's bath-room—"the one place I knew they wouldn't look." Dell was worried about telling his parents that he preferred business to premed.
