An Alabama Community Responds to Disaster With an Unusual STEM Education Project

Feral hogs, an invasive species, were becominga nuisance in Moulton, Alabama, wrecking the area's corn, soy and cotton fields. They polluted local streams and pushed out the deer population. For BeLinda Cross and Gina McCarley, two teachers at Lawrence County High School, the feral hog problem was a perfect fit for the Samsung-sponsored Solve for Tomorrow competition. This national program encourages middle and high school students to come up with solutions for local problems using skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and then the finalists make a video of their efforts.
