Lipids are a large and diverse group of molecules that include fats, sterols, phospholipids, glycerides and many others. The main biological functions of lipids include energy storage, as structural components of cell membranes, and as important signaling molecules. These findings have led to an increasing interest into lipid analysis at large scale during the past years, also coined „Lipidomics". The huge structural variety makes their analysis quite demanding.
