Formed at Hendon, Middlesex, on March 17, 1930, 604 Squadron was an Auxiliary Air Force bomber unit. For the first six months of its existence it flew somewhat tired de Havilland DH.9As and beyond these came Westland Wapitis, which soldiered on until 1935. On July 23, 1934, the County of Middlesex squadron was redesignated as a fighter unit and another interim type was brought in to carry out this role - the light bomber Hawker Hart. The intended type was the Hawker Demon and these began to arrive in the summer of 1935. Conversion to Bristol Blenheim If fighters began at Hendon in January 1939. The day before World War Two was declared, September 2, 1939, 604 Squadron moved to North Weald in Essex, starting night patrols. The unit was being groomed to become a dedicated night-fighter squadron and in September 1940, the first Bristol Beaufighter Is arrived.
