Considering its relatively small size, the Central American island of Cuba has always 'punched over its weight' when it comes to world affairs. For example, in the Middle Ages, the Spanish used it as a departure point when shipping treasures home from the 'new world' - and surely everyone has heard of the missile crisis of October 1962. The same goes for the leaders who headed the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro and 'Che' Guevara.
