摘要

In the October issue, artist Robin Smith explains the background to his painting 'All the King's Men'. He states that the blue lines on the map, shown in his still life print, do not actually exist and that they are not roads or railways.rnI believe that they are showing the road and railways that existed in the 1940s. The blue line between Leicester and the Coalville area, uses woodland and water features as markers, yet is still within two miles of the winding railway.rnPilots would not have to slavishly follow a railway, as a steam train would be visible for miles. The extensive rail network was known as the 'Poor Pilot's Compass', or 'Travelling by Bradshaw' -after the compiler of the railway timetables.
