Birth of the 'BE'

As outlined on page 42, Geoffrey de Havilland joined what was to become the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough in 1911 as a designer and test pilot. Two of the types he pioneered at the RAF became major types in the Great War. The FE.2 was first flown by Geoffrey on August 18,1911 and - much developed, enlarged and refined - it became the Wellington bomber of its day.
