By anyone's standards, Peter Ayerst's RAF career was extraordinary. Joining up in 1938 on a short service commission, he went on to fly operationally from the beginning to the end of the war. In that time he is believed to have flown every mark of Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane that came into RAF service.rnThis did not go unnoticed by the legendary Alex Henshaw. In early 1945, Peter joined Alex's team carrying out production test flying at the massive Castle Bromwich plant in the Midlands, plus other sorties from the satellite facility at Cosford, Shropshire, and other Vickers-Supermarine plants.
