Memories of Great Orton

A memorial commemorating the former RAF airfield at Great Orton in Cumbria, known locally as Wiggonby, was unveiled on October 24. It has been erected by The Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, a charity that aims to sustain memories of the sacrifices made during wartime. Opened in June 1943, Great Orton was mainly used as a satellite airfield for nearby Silloth by Vickers Wellingtons of 6 Operational Training Unit. A few other flying units were stationed there in World War Two for shorter periods, notably 55 OTU's Hawker Hurricanes and two Vickers Warwick squadrons.
