War in a Whitley

I was fascinated to read the article [January issue] on 58 Squadron based on Pit Off John Mitchell's account. I can add some further information, which might be of interest. My father, Sgt H J Walters, RAF VR (later Sqn Ldr) was second pilot to PIt Off 'Brownie' Brown, with John Mitchell as navigator, on his first five operations which are referred to in the article. My father also carried out an additional raid with Pit Off Brown on September 20, when Sgt Brightmore was the navigator. Pit Off Brown with Sgt Walters as second pilot, went on a search over the North Sea on September 22 looking for a 58 Squadron Whitley which had ditched; sadly they did not find the crew.
