The Whitley goes to war

For the Whitley crews of No 4 Group the Second World War began in a non-provocative war of words. Neville Chamberlain's government adopted a delicate approach, and rather than dropping bombs on Germany, the policy was to drop propaganda leaflets so as not to provoke reprisal attacks. It was hoped that the leaflets, known in the RAF by the code name Nickel, would convince the German people that Hitler's aggressive tactics were not the way forward.
