TO WAR IN A WHITLEY

As an active member of the RAF Volunteer Reserve, John Mitchell was immediately called out when war was declared and left his job at His Majesty's Customs and Excise. His rank was Leading Aircraftman Observer under training, and so John avoided the dreaded 'square bashing' at Initial Training Wing. Instead, he was posted directly to the Air Observers Navigation School at Prestwick, Scotland. AONS was detached for a few weeks to Aldergrove, Northern Ireland.
