Civilians Flew Spitfires

The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) is among the most frequently overlooked of the services that contributed to Allied victory in World War Two. Consisting of more than 1,200 pilots, the ATA was a civilian organisation created to ferry aircraft of all types to the airfields from which they would operate. In doing so, it saved military personnel a huge amount of time and manpower.
