摘要

Ted Peck was born in London on May 9, 1925, and witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Luftwaffe's Blitz against the British capital. As recounted in last month's issue, he joined the RAF as soon as he was old enough, and after training as a flight engineer he and his new crew joined 622 Squadron at Mildenhall during August 1944. "We'd been on the station for seven days before we did our first 'op'. It didn't shake us to be on the Battle Order. We'd accepted it as inevitable and had the attitude that the sooner it happened the better." The crew had the much relished pre-flight meal, invariably a plate of bacon and eggs given as a morale booster, before heading for the briefing room. "There was always nervous chatter before and after the target was announced by the CO. The navigator and wireless operator [W/Op] had had pre-briefs with their leaders but there was no specific information for the FEs [flight engineers].
