The idea of play is central to childhood, as well as an expectation and a right of every child, regardless of culture, geographic location, or nationality. Children all over the world are expected to play as part of growing up. Adults, on the other hand, suddenly have the idea of "work" juxtaposed against the idea of play— and "work" usually wins. I want to start this month's column off with two photos—one of three and one-half year old Frank Woods Ⅲ, who likes to help his grandpa build and fly models—and the other of Tom Fennell, slightly older than young Mr. Woods. While young Frank is learning that models can be a part of his play, Tom has never forgotten that play is essential to his life. Some neuroscientists have postulated that the amount the brain grows is directly related to the amount of play engaged by a given individual. So the next time someone asks you if you are still playing with toy airplanes, answer proudly in the affirmative— and then think to yourself how much smarter and younger you are than the person who asked the question!
