ONE OF A KIND TURBOPROP ENGINE TEST BED

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, several new turboprop engines were being developed in America for possible use on heavy bombers and large cargo transports. To evaluate them In flight, a number of engine test-bed aircraft were built for such purposes. The EB-17G-cum-JB-17G was one of them.rnIn 1946, two Boeing B-17G Flying Fortresses were modified to serve as flying test beds for two new turboprop engines being developed by Wright Aeronautical and Pratt & Whitney. The two airplanes, stripped of all military equipment with their cockpits moved aft, received a revised Boeing model number 299-Z, and they were designated EB-17G.
