I can but agree with Capt Awad Thomas Fakoussa {Flight International, 28 Sept-1 October). However, "well-trained older brains" are not the sole solution to situations such as "in extremis" on standby instruments. With the "old brains" rapidly retiring, these scenarios need to be practised and perfected in the simulator, with the skills subsequently re-honed during recurrent training. There appears to be a requirement to overhaul the current training syllabus in simulators, to "fly the wing" and with much more emphasis on the physics of flying as proposed by test pilot/adviser Harry Nelson.
