Last issue I asked, somewhat ironically, "Is this global warming thing for real?" I pointed to the several feet of snow that was on the ground, the cold snaps across the globe, and the missteps in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth as reasons to doubt the veracity of the global warming claims. (That column, by the way, seemed to have touched a nerve. I received more responses to that column than any I've written, except for the one in which I explained how we pick cities for our annual conference, which resulted in dozens of folks requesting that NAFA consider their home towns. Please feel free to continue to respond via email or phone. And please be sure to let me know if I can publish your response in the magazine.) I ended my last column by stating that we mortals are not off the hook in terms of doing whatever we can to reduce carbon emissions. I wrote, "Anything we can do to help prolong, extend, and preserve our planet is a positive step, so long as it makes good economic sense and will be impactful." I am happy to report that many of those solutions are being tested today by fleets across the United States and Canada, as this industry - and this Association - leads the way in reducing carbon emissions and oil dependency. That is why NAFA has launched the industry's first and premiere "Green Fleet Awards" to recognize individuals who have implemented pioneering, innovative and creative programs to help their company's overall "going green" initiatives.
